We are starting off 2015 with a new "Monthly member profile" Series. We are going to focus on members who have come to MCFE w/ stories of injuries and all the reasons/excuses NOT to CrossFit. Luckily, We know that functional movement, w/ good technique is VERY REHABILITATIVE! We also know the ripped to shreds elite CF Games athletes are not the majority. CrossFit is for ANYONE that wants to fight getting old tooth and Nail. No one better to kick this off than Pam (go NE Patients!!!!...GAG!) Pogue! Who i had the privilege of meeting in the clinic and now can call her a strong member of our Community!
Before I moved to Maui 3 1/2 years ago, I was told by my sports ortho that I needed a knee replacement and had "Bo Jackson's disease" my hips were deteriorating and arthritic. My dad and great grandmother both had bad hips. I threw my back out while moving in and was eventually sent to Lee Poston for PT, and got my back fixed up quickly. I saw the Crossfit posters in his office and thought "no way in hell - those days are long gone." I was raised in South Florida and swam competitively beginning at the age of 4 through college and swam Masters after until I turned 24. In high school I was an All-State volleyball player, in college I rowed and was invited to try out for the Olympic rowing team. After college I competed in and was a sponsored tri-athlete. However, that was 30 years ago and does not mean squat(No pun intended) now. I never thought I'd be able to get in shape like that again. Or train like that again.
Fast forward 30 years to a Hawaii Water Works Association (HWWA) cocktail reception - I meet Joy Gannon, yeah 1 week later I was attending MCFE beginner's classes.
What has Crossfit done for me? Given me back my health, sanity, nutrition, confidence and provided wonderful friendships and a new vocabulary. What I missed most about my previous competitive endeavors - great coaches. Lee, Darrell, Margie, Mark, Joanna and Wakon are all so tremendous. I do not think there is anyone else who could get me to walk out of meetings at work (once with the Mayor and his staff), go to the box to throw weights (and my body) around, curse and sweat for 45 minutes! I cannot express enough gratitude to Margie and Joanna for all of their support for the Paleo lessons. I was an avid Weight Watchers member -- every week getting on the damn scale was so morally deflating (oooh bad pun right now). It just did not work. These wonderful coaches preached the Paleo way and for the past 1 1/2 years I have not measured a thing, given up dairy, grains and all the obvious processed stupid stuff. Now, 18 months later, I am down 35 lbs and 4 sizes! I now sleep at night as I never have, I do not have the regular migraines, my joint pain is nearly gone in the morning and I can think much more clearly.
I sit all day in front of a computer and spend too much time on a phone. Crossfit workouts have helped with my flexibility, strength and balance -- my joints do not hurt like they used to. When I first met Lee in his office -- he had me do a squat. After I looked at him like he was nuts, I tried to squat, I'm pretty sure it was a "no rep!" In the Crossfit beginner classes, I struggled with the PVC. Even weeks later I was the first person to grab the 10 pound bar. Today my PR for a back squat is 155, it is now a deep "Lee-Poston approved" squat. With overhead squats, I had to use the wall because not only would I fall over, I could not get down. My PR for an overhead squat is 85 pounds.
Crossfit has given me a part of my life back that I never thought I'd enjoy again. Athletic camaraderie with people I truly care about. No one knows more than I do -- you do not need to be an "elite athlete" to reap the benefits from Crossfit! Elite athletes get old too. This wonderful camaraderie has pushed me to exceed far beyond any threshold I'd ever imagined. Did I also mention the new, fun vocabulary you learn as a Crossfit athlete? How much fun is it to use words like "WOD" "Snatch" "Clean & Jerk" "Burpees" and have the kitschy t-shirts as well?
I would recommend CrossFit to anyone. Step out of your comfort zone (I did)! Come work with Lee, who is a PT, and the awesome Coaching staff at Maui CrossFit Extreme and Change YOUR life, join Crossfit!
